Han Shi is now dean of the Cultural Management Department of People’s Liberation Army Academy of Arts and professor of the National Defence University of People’s Liberation Army. Professor Han is absorbed in the theories and creation of calligraphy and painting, and he is good at landscape painting, flower-and-bird painting, figure painting and different calligraphy styles. The exhibits show his deep attainments in traditional techniques and his attention to creation and development. His deep understanding and mastery of calligraphy essence can be sensed from his boundless and vigorous seal character works, his unbridled and romantic cursive script, his antique and flexible official script, and his straightforward and flowing running script. His masterpieces, especially “Ode to Hangzhou” (《杭州赋》) and “Ode to Nanjing” (《南京赋》), are good representations of his profound skills and humanistic accomplishments. His Chinese paintings on display come in various types that combine freehand brushwork and fine brushwork. These colorful and magnificent works fully embody the artistic temperament of this literati painter who pursue an attainment with calligraphy as bone and poetry as soul.

In January 2017, Professor Han Shi launched his personal “National Tour Exhibition of Painting and Art Works”, which has so far been successfully held in 8 cities: Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Xiamen, Quanzhou, Fuzhou, Taiyuan, Xi’an and Sanya. Hangzhou is the ninth city to welcome the exhibition. This exhibition is a systematic cultural project that includes “display, donation, lecture, and assistance”. Professor Han Shi donated 15 series (more than 50 pieces) of paintings and calligraphy works to the Fujian Provincial Art Museum, Taiyuan Archives, and the Imperial Edict Museum. His donations not only enrich the collection of the beneficiary museums, but also effectively promote academic and artistic exchanges. Professor Han Shi practically lives up to the responsibility and role as a literary and art worker. He also has the confidence and determination to carry on this public cultural undertaking and create more new works that keep pace with the times. He will practice calligraphy and paint for people and the motherland forever.
