Zhang Yuejian (1924-2003), a nativeofPujiang, Zhejiang Province, graduated from Hangzhou National College of Art (China Academy of Art at present). He had worked at Shanghai People’s Publishing House and Shanghai Education Publishing House for artistic creation for many years. In 1979, he was transferred as a teacher to the department of traditional Chinese painting at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. During his lifetime, he was the professor of China Academy of Art, member of Chinese Artists Association, librarian of Zhejiang Research Institute of Culture and History, member of Xiling Society of Seal Arts, distinguished painter of Zhejiang Fine Art Institute, distinguished curator of Research Institute of Xiling Calligraphy and Painting and Wu Fuzhi Museum. He excelled in flower-and-bird painting, and was also good at figure and landscape paintings, as well as calligraphy. He studied with masters like Pan Tianshou and Wu Fuzhi, and pursued the path of Wu Changshuo, Shi Tao, Ba Da, and Chen Laolian. He attached same importance to tradition and innovation in his paintings with exaggerated molding, succinct and vigorous ink application, precise and interesting composition, conception in rich flavor of life, and unique artistic personality.

The exhibition display nearly 200 pieces of Zhang Yuejian’s painting and calligraphy works, most of which are the collections his family have donated to ZJAM and Zhejiang Provincial Museum, and some of which are from his family’s collections. Besides, there are 50-odd pieces of chronology, old photos and documents on display, which present relatively comprehensive achievements of Zhang Yuejian’s paintings and calligraphies, teaching and theoretical researches.
