A Chronology of Zhang Yuejian’s Artistic Works1924 The First Year in A Circle of Sixty Years One Year Old On August 12 (lunar Jiazi year or July 12), he was born at midnight in Qili Village, Pujiang County, Zhejiang Province. He was styled himself as “Zhengzhong” and “Jianzhe”, and was also named Shujiuchong, Qilitingzhang, Zhaohuilouzhu and so on. His father was named Zhang Zimei, running a school and teaching as a career, and his mother was named Fu Yuhua. 1931 The Eighth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Eight Years old He was enrolled into a higher primary school of Puyang County. Affected by family, he has a ardent love for painting and folk art, and was a avid reader of Bai She Album and so on. 1937 The Fourteenth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Fourteen Years Old He passed the entry examination of Shanghai Jun Yi Middle School in Yiwu, Zhejiang. 1940 The Seventeenth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Seventeen Years Old He graduated from middle school, and entered the China High School in Yiwu, Zhejiang. 1941 The Eighteenth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Eighteen Years Old Japanese planes in the action of invading China bombed the school, leaving it suspension. After the fall of Yiwu and Pujiang, he could not continue his study and went back home, helping the family to do some works such as herd cows. He insisted on reviewing the school works learned and facsimileing albums, including the family-collected Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual and the woodcut Four Types of Figure Paintings by Ren Weichang. 1944 The Twenty-first Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Twenty-one Years Old In the May of this year, his father went to Yunhe, Zhejiang for teaching. He fled the enemy-occupied area on foot with his father, and in the same year, transferred to Shufan High School (now the Hangzhou NO.9 High School) in Longquan, Zhejiang, to continue his study. 1946 The Twenty-third Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Twenty-three Years Old Anti-Japan War seized the fruit of victory. He returned Pujiang after graduation from high school and taught at Pujiang County Central Primary School. In that spring, introduced by Wu Shiji, a colleague, he brought his paintings of flower and birds and figures to call on Wu Fuzhi, a professor of the National College of Art who went back hometown to visit relatives, with the wishes for advice. After seeing the paintings, Wu Fuzhi was delighted, thought well of his works and encouraged him to register the examination of the National College of Art in Hangzhou. 1947 The Twenty-fourth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Twenty-four Years Old On the New Year's Day of this year, the Chinese Painting Exhibition of Huang Yingchuan, Zhang Shijian, Zhang Tao and him, who were the colleagues in Youth Painting Club in Pujiang, was held in Fuyang Civil Exhibition Hall. In the first half year, he taught at the Central Primary School of Xianhua Town, Pujiang County. In July, he was admitted to the Department of Tradition Chinese Painting of the National College of Art. He was personally tutored by Huang Binhong, Pan Tianshou, Wu Fuzhi, Zhu Lesan and other masters, learning to paint flowers and birds as well as mountains and waters, practice calligraphy, study history and theory of painting, poems and essays and so on. 1948 The Twenty-fifth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Twenty-five Years Old This year, he painted the Chinese painting of The Three Purities. Pan Tianshou appreciated this painting and wrote poetry on it. He also created the Painting of Plum and Orchid, Wu Fuzhi Tiba said in the inscription: “In this work of Yuejian, Plum is underlying strength and orchid is expressing charm and grace, which is almost what Dongpo called as robust but graceful and dignified but beautiful.” 1949 The Twenty-sixth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Twenty-six Years Old With the foundation of New China, Department of Tradition Chinese Painting and the Department of Oil Painting was combined into Department of painting. He paid attention to learn figure sketching and oil painting, and quickly grasp the figure painting methods in real life. He conducted several grassroots life experience, collecting creative material for painting. He together with Yan Han participated water conservancy work in Yiqiang, Yuhang, to collect materials for graduation figure painting. 1950 The Twenty-seventh Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Twenty-seven Years Old In the Spring Festival of this year, he married Miss Wu Wanxiang, which was witnessed by Pan Tianshou and his wife. In March, under the introduction of his father-in-law, Wu Fuzhi, he together with his classmate Lin Kai called on Mr. Huang Binhong for advice. Seeing the spot demonstration of Mr. Huang Binhong, they learnt something valuable. He used traditional double hook line drawing to create figure paintings, and had yielded fruitful results. On January 28, his Production and Fortune and other four paintings were published in Zhejiang Daily; on April 28, Idler A’lan and other nine pieces were published in Guangzhou Daily; on May 4, four pieces of Do All Preparation Work for Land Reform, and four pieces of Do All Preparation Work for Spring Ploughing were published in Shanghai Wen Wei Po. Graduation creative works Embanking was praised by Mr. Han Yan, and it was recommended to publish on Zhejiang Daily, People’s Daily, and Shanghai's Wen Wei Po. In July, after graduation from art school, he was assigned to the Shanghai People's Publishing House to engage in creative arts work. 1951 The Twenty-eighth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Twenty-eight Years Old On 25, May, Increasing Production for the Korean War and other four figure paintings were published in the Liberation Daily. On 16, June, Overcoming Natural Disasters (flood, pest and drought) and other three paintings were published in the Liberation Daily. On 21, July, Do All special care work, Strengthen the Korean War and other figure paintings were published in Liberation Daily. 1952 The Twenty-ninth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Twenty-nine Years Old In Shanghai, he communicated with Guan Liang, Zhu Qizhan, Xie Zhiliu, and Chen Peiqiu, and enquired painting experience. Often he visited the painting exhibition, to observe the famous works of Duo Yunxuan and search for rare books, famous art collections, seals stamps and rubbings, which made vision wide open. 1953 The Thirtieth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Thirty Years Old He created in collaboration with Chen Fuping comic strip A Garrison Soldier (77 pages), published by the Shanghai Fine Arts Publishing House. 1954 The Thirty-first Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Thirty-one Years Old In Shanghai, he booked Anhui rice paper for the Pan Tianshou and Wu Fuzhi , and purchased imported western red pigments, malachite green, azurite, ocher pigments, extracted from mineral plant, and special inkpad. He together with Wang Zidou, an old classmate, collected, researched and arranged traditional Chinese line drawing album Four Kinds of Figure Paintings of Ren Weichang, penned by Wang Zidou and published by Shanghai People's Publishing House. 1955 The Thirty-second Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Thirty-two Years Old In October, he finished the creation of the comic strip Old Man Meng (52pages) , published by Beijing Chaohua Fine Arts Publishing House. 1956 The Thirty-third Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Thirty-three Years Old His 24 pieces of comic strip Fan Jin Passing the Provincial Civil Service Examination published on 111st issue of Picture Stories, which received considerable repercussions from comic book industry, and got peer recognition in painting industry. Fan Zeng, Lin Kai and other masters gave a high marks to it. Lin Kai said in commentary: “this comic strip absorbed the good qualities to considerable extent of Four Kinds of Figure Paintings of Ren Weichang, with highlight of figure expression but not pretentiousness, exaggerative action but not non-comic. It should especially note that the treatment of clothes pleats, which were density and white, and appropriate in empty and full. The arrangement of background props was refined, which were compact and subtle, making the painting full of rhythmic expression. The content of the story was fully and appropriately expressed, with quite a sense of humor and unique features. ” In October, his wife Wu Wanxiang got a two -bedroom house from her workplace in Hangzhou, and ever since he had his own studio. 1957 The Thirty-fourth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Thirty-four Years Old His Beheading the King of Zhao (78 pages) was issued hardcover edition by the People's Fine Arts Publishing House. 1958 The Thirty-fifth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Thirty-five Years Old In March, the comic strip One Shoe (44 pages) was published by the Beijing Chaohua Publishing House. In August, the comic strip She Is a Fellow (97 pages) was published by the People's Fine Arts Publishing House. 1959 The Thirty-sixth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Thirty- six Years Old He summarized his work in the Shanghai People's Publishing House engaged in comic creation for a decade, painstakingly researched traditional line drawing techniques, and received advice about painting of flowers and birds from Mr. Wu Fuzhi, his father-in-law, which all made him gained progress in painting techniques. In July, his ink and color picture book Ancient Chinese Fables – Decline to Receive Visitors for Fire (11 pages) was published by the Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House. 1963 The Fortieth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Forty Years Old In November, his comic strip Grow in Wind and Rain (58 pages) was published by Beijing Chaohua Fine Arts Publishing House. 1964 The Forty-first Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Forty-one Years Old During the Spring Festival, the couple of Pan Tianshou and the couple of Wu Fuzhi came to visit him. After seeing his painting, Pan Tianshou said: “Painting creation should go an extreme way, being strong or soft is best. On the 50th birthday, he received homemade gifts, pen container made from bamboo root, from Lin Kai, engraved seal script “it is extremely fragrant and clean, and special artful but not simple, its shape likes a piece of wood, but it can store peals and jades.” Postscript said: “I cannot see you when miss you, looking at the green Chu Mountain. What the Chu Mountain has is bamboo; I intercepted a thick bamboo tube. I send this gift to you to place your pens. Accompanied by the Lin Kai, he called on a visit to Liu Jiyou to view Liu’s paintings and exchange creative experience. 1975 The Fifty-second Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Fifty-two Years Old In July, appointed by the work unit, he and the other ten people of the Shanghai Publication Bureau formed a team to experience life in Nanjing Meishan Steel Base. They worked together with workers in the mine for nearly a year. During this period, they drew a lot of character sketches, created painting album of Meishan Base landscapes, of which 12 paintings were framed into a book. Mr. Lu Yanshao titled Landscape Painting Book of Zhang Yuejian. In June, he went to sketch on Mount Huangshan in Anhui together with team members of Yang Han, Feng Junian, and Cheng Zengxiang. In July, after the finish of life in base, he went back to work in Education Section of Shanghai People's Publishing House. 1977 The Fifty-fourth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Fifty-four Years Old In January, the Education Section of Shanghai People's Publishing House was reorganized and Shanghai Education Publishing House was established. He was responsible for art creation and editorial work of comics and illustrations. In March, he received two letters from Professor Fang Zengxian of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, negotiating job swap to resolve the problem of their separation with their waives. Mr. Wu Fuzhi, accompanied by a disciple of Zhu Yingren, came to Shanghai to treat stomach illness in Ruixin Hospital. During this period, he made a regular visit to the hospital to take care Mr. Wu. In April, he made a seal for Wu Fuzhi, used as a painting and calligraphy work presented to medical staff before discharge. On April 27, Mr. Wu went back to Hangzhou. On May 27, Mr. Wu hospitalized in Zhejiang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He accepted request of Mr. Wu to sort out his poems and ask Mr. Lu Weizhao to examine and revise. July 26, Mr. Wu died. In December, he came back to Hangzhou to attend the Painting Exhibition of Pan Tianshou held in Zhejiang Exhibition Hall, and reunited with an old friend Lin Kai. This year, his major works were Plum, Orchid, Bamboo and Chrysanthemum, Mr. Dong Guo and the Wolf, and so on. And the16K album of Outstanding Birds and Flowers Paintings of Zhang Yuejian was titled by Lu Yifei. 1978 The Fifty-fifth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Fifty-five Years Old This year, the main works that he finished were painting Vision of Flower Harbor, Nutrition of Rain and Dew, Fairy Flowers for Elites, Lotus Pond after Rain and so on. In September, he went to the hometown of Lei Feng in Wangcheng, Changsha, Hunan, and visited the Lei Feng Memorial Hall and the school where Lei Feng had studied in. He asked the whereabouts of Lei Feng, gathering material for the creation of Lei Feng story. In April, he created ink and color comic strip Miracle Doctor Ma Elects Disciples (22 pages) published by the People's Fine Arts Publishing House. In July, he finished the creation of figure painting Wang Mian paints Lotus. In August, he went to Shanghai to visit Mr. Zhu Qizhan, to asking him to tile the painting exhibition of Wu Fuzhi. In October, he finished the creation of comic strip Legend of Love (118 pages) , published by the People's Fine Arts Publishing House. In October, he wrote the essay The Implied Meaning of an Animal Painting is Vivid - Avid Reader of Mr. Wu Fuzhi’s Crab Painting, published in the tenth edition of East Sea in 1980. This year, his main works were Birds and Flowers in the Morning Wind Floating Fragrance and Moon at Dusk, Listen to the Spring, Myna Orchid and Stone, Zhong Kui, Autumn Chrysanthemum and so on. 1982 The Fifty-ninth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Fifty-nine Years Old Department of Tradition Chinese Painting of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts was divided into professional teaching of figure, landscape, flowers and birds, and he served as a teacher of basis and creation of Chinese painting of flowers and birds. In January, he participated in the exhibition of a painter whose home was in Pujiang, Zhejiang. Together with Fang Zengxian, Zhang Shijain, Liu Cun, he drew a painting for Tashan Hotel in Pujiang. He and Zhu Ying co-authored essay His Virtues are Evergreen in Art World —To Memorize Mr. Wu Fuzhi, published in the first edition of the New Art in 1982. In October, he went to some famous parks and scenic spots to sketch and collect creative materials, including Huishan, Plum Park, Turtle Head Isle and other scenics of Wuxi, and Dangwei Mountain, Tin Ping Shan Mountain, Hanshan Temple and other places of Suzhou. In April, he led 15 retired cadres students of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, and 20 students of flowers and birds painting class of Zhejiang University for the Aged go to paint flowers on Xiling Bridge, Hangzhou Flowery Nursery, Huagang Park. In May, with the invitation of Xiling Arts, he wrote On Chinese Painting, serialized in the newspaper, with one essay a month and total of six. In September, his works Double Heron and Moon was displayed on the 3rd China-Japan Ink Painting Exhibition. Introduced by Mr. Lu Yanshao, Mr. Li Zhenjia, he joined the Chinese Artists Association. In October, together with Yan Youjun, he went to experience life and collect materials for flowers and birds as well as landscapes painting in Zhangjiajie in Hunan, Lushan Mountain in Jiangxi, Wuyi Mountain in Fujian and other places. During this period, he finished the two first drafts of Zhangjiajie Landscape Painting, and one Wuyishan Jiuqu River Painting. In December, his works Plum and Eagle, Bamboo Birds, Peony and Chicks, Chrysanthemum and Mynas, New Flowers in Earthen Bottle were displayed on the Fourth Annual Exhibition of Zhejiang Flowers and Birds Painting Society held in Zhejiang Exhibition Hall. His major works this year were Birds in Bamboo Forest, Bamboo Stream and Amphibious, Peony and Chicks, Wuyishan Range Rover Landscape Scroll and so on. 1988 The Fifth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Sixty-five Years Old In February, he participated in the inaugural meeting of China Painting and Calligraphy Society of China Democratic League of Zhejiang Province, and was elected as executive director, with Sha Menghai as president and Wang Bomin as vice president. He participated in the Sixtieth Anniversary Commemoration of Wu Changshuo and the opening activity of Wu Changshuo Memorial, held by Meilin Hotel on Chaoshan Mountain of Yuhang. In April, his work Loquat was displayed on the Sixtieth Anniversary of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts Alumni Exhibition. In May, he devoted 12 albums of flowers and birds paintings to the Pan Tianshou Foundation. In June, by the appointment of the president Lu Yanshao of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, he served as distinguished painter of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. He taught Patterning Method and Styling Tips of Flowers and Birds Painting for the sophomore of Flowers and Birds Painting Major, Chinese Painting Department, Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. In July, together with Pan Honghai, Zhang Huasheng, Xing Geping, Feng Yunyu, Lv Mai, Zhu Qideng and other colleagues in Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, he went to sketch on Fuchun River, Qililong Gorge, Fishing Terrace, Gourd Waterfall and other scenic in Hangzhou. He was appointed as vice president, and he presented the seminar to commemorate the Ninetieth Anniversary of the Birth of Wu Fuzhi and the exhibition of members’ works. In May, accompanied by Mr. Mi Hong, Qian Wen visited him, and exchanged and discussed Huang Binhong art. At the invitation of Sanin Painting and Calligraphy Society of Shaoxing CPPCC, together with Huang Yibin, Wang Bomin, Bao Chen, He Shuifa, he presented the opening ceremony of Painting and Calligraphy Group Exhibition of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui Provinces’ CPPCC held in Shaoxing, and drew a painting for the society. At the invitation of Yongkang Literary Federation, together with Zhang Huasheng, Lv Mai, Zhang Weimin, He Shuifa, Xu Yinghuai, Liu Hang, Xing Geping, et al, colleagues of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, he went to visit Wufeng Painting and Calligraphy Institute, Fang Yanhu Temple and other places. In October, the work Double Herons and Moon was showed on the Art Exhibition hosted by Zhejiang Province to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the founding of China. He finished the creation of Starling and Chrysanthemum to express congratulations on the tenth anniversary of Xiling Painting and Calligraphy Institute. In November, he participated in the Pen Centre held by the China Calligraphy and Painting Society of the NLD of Zhejiang Provincial Committee and Japan Tianxi Calligraphy Society. In cooperation with Qian Dali, he created a flowers and birds painting as gift. He joined the Hu Tian Yi Bi Pen Center of Xiling Painting and Calligraphy Institute. Together with Liu Jiang, Liu Cun, Wang Bomin , Wu Shanming , Kong Zhongqi, Jin Jiancai, he created a large flowers and plants painting. His major work of this year included Three Friends of Winter, Spring Hide in Deep Valley, White Lotus and Kingfisher, Colors of Autumn and so on. 1990 The Seventh Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Sixty-seven Years Old In January, he created a six feet painting of River in Spring for the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Fuyang. At the invitation of Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting Society of CPPCC Zhejiang Province, he created Catharanthus Roseus to participate in a joint exhibition between China and Japan in Gifu City. In April, he was elected as a member of the NLD branch of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. He created two flowers and birds paintings to congratulate the foundation of Zhu Lesan Art Research Association in Anji. In September, the Research Department of Xiling Painting and Calligraphy Institute was established. He was hired as a researcher. In collaboration with Zhou Cangmi, Liu Cun, Wu Shanming , Zhu Yingren, he draw a big horizontal hanging scroll as congratulations. Together with Wang Fuiing, Sun Xueli, Lv Mai, Huang Mingzhu, Jin Jiaji, he went to visit Qufu, browsing Confucian Temple, Kong Family Mansion, Ceremonies of Confucius and his Descendents, Temple of Mencius. They climbed Mount Tai, swam in Jining Lake, and created several pieces of paintings. In October, he participated in Ninety Birthday Conference of Wu Fuzhi and Zhang Shuqi as well as the seminar, and drew several pieces of paintings. He was employed as the teacher to take charge of the foundation and creative teaching task of the Flowers and Birds Painting Major of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts Painting Department from 1990 to 1992. In November, he taught flowers and birds painting in the Department of the History of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, with keynote on the demonstration of tricks and modeling rules of flowers and birds painting. He devoted 12 flowers and birds albums to Pan Tianshou Foundation, which were framed into a book, and displayed on the Exhibition of Contemporary Chinese Painters’ Works held in Hong Kong. These works were the selected into Works of Famous Contemporary Chinese Artists, which was supervised by Pan Tianshou Foundation and published by Aristo Press in the Hong Kong Peninsula. His major works this year included Braving the Snow for Plum Blossoms, Birds fly around Flowers in Spring, and Orchids. 1991 The Eighth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Sixty-eight Years Old In January, the work Cool Elegance was selected into Chinese Contemporary Calligraphy and Painting Selection - Continental Album, published by Hong Kong Hon Wing Book Publishing House. Along with Liu Jiang, Lv Guozhang, Ding Maolu, Huang Zhenzhong, Zhu Miaogen, Zhu Changshou, Lu Xiujing, Li Wencai and other one, he went to Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, to participate in China Narcissus Festival, and presented six paintings as gift. Together with He Shuifa, Tong Zhongtao, Bao Chenchu, Zhu Suizhi, Ma Qikuan, Xujia Chang, Wang Qingming, Li Zihou, Zhang Pincao, he went to Zhaoqing City, Guangdong, to visit Dinghu Mountain, Chongxi Tower, Seven Star Cave, Star Lake, Bao Gong Temple, etc. They also visited and sketched at Duan inkstand. In March, he took a part in the Work Exhibition of Researchers in Xiling Painting and Calligraphy Institution held by Zhu La Memorial in Nanchang, Jiangxi. In April, he presented the Cross-strait Urban Art Research Exchange. Along with Xiao Feng, Lu Yifei, Wang Bomin, Zhu Heng, Lu Kunfeng, Ye Shangqing, Zhang Pincao, Xu Jiachang, Ma Qikuan, Qian Dali, he created two flowerspaintings, and the mainland and Taiwan each retained one. In May, he rejoined with Zhang Shijian in Xizi Hotel, and cheerfully talked about art. In October, he was appointed as a member of Research Institute of Culture and History of Zhejiang Province. In November, he joined the Xiling Society of Seal Arts. Paintings of Zhang Yuejian was published by the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts Publishing House and Sha Menghai wrote the title. His major works this year included Longevity and Cat and Butterfly. 1992 The Ninth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Sixty-nine Years Old In January, he edited Virtuosi Skills - Qi Baishi Paints Shrimp and Crab, published by Xiling Society of Seal Arts Press. In March, he wrote Wu Fuzhi Biography, and Wu Fuzhi's Painting Theories and Techniques, published in the 34th edition of Cloudlet of Shanghai Calligraphy Press in 1992. He went to Ninghai to commemorate 95th Anniversary of the Birth of Mr. Pan Tianshou, and made a lecture of Mr. Pan Tianshou Flowers and birds Painting’s Patterning art on the meeting. In June, at the invitation of Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House, he completed forty illustrations of poetries, which lasted six months. In July, he completed eighteen illustrations for the Chinese Traditional Virtues’ Story. In August, he participated in the delegation of Zhejiang Jingxie to inspect Northwest China. He visited Binglingsi Grottoes, Jiayu Pass, Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Crescent Lake, Xinjiang Tianchi, Xi'an Stele Forest, Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses, Famen Temple, Huaqing Hot Spring, Big Goose Pagoda, Small Goose Pagoda and other spots, collecting material, and created ten pieces of works. He visited Huanghuagang Mausoleum of 72 Martyrs in Guangzhou, Chen Clan Temple, Foshan Ancestral Temple, Shiwan Ceramic Art Factory, living areas of Li and Miao nationalities in Sanya, Ultima Thule, East Mountain Peak, Li Shuoxun Martyrs’ Grave, Temple of Five Lords, Su Gong Temple, Hairui tomb and other places. In March, he wrote inscriptional record for the newly built tomb of Zhang Luoxing of the Ming Dynasty in Xianli Village, Pujing County. In April, his essay Chinese Painting Features of Wu Fuzhi and his Personality was collected into the book Chinese Painting in Sixty-five Years of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts published by Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts Publishing House. He went to Shanghai to visit the Rodin Sculpture Exhibition, visited the residence of Liu Dan, exchanged ideas about painting, and drew two paintings on site. In December, he presented the Donation Acceptation Ceremony of Wu Fuzhi Memorial held in Pujiang Government of Hangzhou City. He donated thirteen paintings and some literatures of Wu Fuzhi and children’s families of Wu Fuzhi donated eighty pieces of work. His major works this year included Fun of Lotus Pond, Jinggangshan Farmhouse Scenery, Flowers Dance in Wind and so on. 1994 The Eleventh Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Seventy- one Years Old In February, Wu Fuzhi Memorial was completed and opened, invited by the government of Pujiang County, he was appointed as ad hoc curator. In April, he and Zhu Ying co-edited Rong Bao Zhai Painting (ninety-seven) - Wu Fuzhi Album, published by the Beijing Rong Bao Zhai. In September, he went to attend the 150th anniversary of Mr. Wu Changshuo, he drew a piece of Orchid and Bamboo and co-drew a six feet large painting as gift. In November, he participated in the visit activity of Chongqing organizad by Zhejiang, Research Institute of Culture and History. Along with Huang Qun, Chen Tao, Cai Jun, Shan Meiyue, Xia Ziyi, Ye Yiwei, Wang Jingfu and others, he travelled Zhaizi Pit, Bai Mansion, Red Rock, Dazu Rock Carvings and the Three Gorges in Chongqing, and Dujiang Dam in Yichang, Yellow Crane Tower, East Lake Chu City, Meiling Mountain in Wuhan and so on. In March, he signed the publish contract of Wu Fuzhi Album with the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts Publishing House. He went to attend the Inaugural Meeting of Wu Fuzhi Foundation and Wu Fuzhi Seminar. In March, his work Spring Dawn in the Divine Land was displayed on the Second National Work Exhibition of Contemporary Famous Flowers and Birds Painters held in Zhengzhou, and won the Excellence Award. In April, he participated in the visit to Yunnan organized by Zhejiang Province Research Institute of Culture and History. Zhejiang Daily and Hangzhou Daily reported news that Zhang Yuejian completed a painting for Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. In February, eight of his bird-and-flower paintings were published in China Art Weekly. Meanwhile, Liu Jiang's article Poise and Charm in Power, and Soul in Simplicity and Honesty—A Look into Zhang Yuejian's Paintings was published. In March, he donated Peony and Orchid to Zhou Enlai Memorial Hall in Shaoxing to memorize the 100th birthday of Zhou Enlai. He collected materials for the 50th National Day, and completed a lotus painting and a National Beauty and Heavenly Fragrance for Zhejiang Provincial Research Institute of Culture and History. In June, his A Book of Techniques of Masters—Peony and Plum Blossom by Wu Changshuo was published by Xuling Society of Seal Arts. He participated in an arts festival in Zhongshan, Guangdong province, together with Wu Shanming, Li Zihou, Ye Shangqing, and Gao Ye. In July, he attended the round co-ceremony of Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains by Huang Gongwang of Yuan dynasty, and an aristo activity between calligraphers and painters from the mainland and Taiwan. In December, he attended the opening ceremony for Wu Fuzhi Arts Center in Jinhua. His main works of this year include National Beauty and Heavenly Fragrance, Colorful Spring Forever, A Family Letter Reports Peace, Egret and Red Lotus, Fragrance Intoxicates Egrets, and others 2000 The Seventeenth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Seventy- seven Years Old In February, his personal art exhibition was held in Shuangling Art Gallery, Yiwu. In March, the "Exhibition of Zhang Yuejian's Traditional Chinese Painting" of the "Series Exhibition of Traditional Chinese Paintings by Students of Wu Fuzhi" was held in Wu Fuzhi Arts Center, Jinhua. In July, he received a cataract resection operation in the Ophthalmology Branch of Zhejiang Second Hospital. In November, to memorize the 100th birthday of Wu Fuzhi, he co-wrote and published Artist of Traditional Chinese Paintings—Wu Fuzhi and Poetry in Paintings of Wu Fuzhi (manuscript). In December, Artist of the New Century—Album of Zhang Yuejian's Chinese Paintings (including three volumes, i.e., flowers and birds, landscape, and figure) was published by Xiling Society of Seal Arts. He voluntarily donated 50 painting and calligraphy works to Zhejiang Provincial Museum. The donating ceremony and exhibition of the 50 works were held in Zhejiang Provincial Museum. His main works of this year include Frostwork Covered on Bamboo Root by West Wind, Lotus and Egret, The Duck Witness the Warmth of the River First in the Spring, and others. 2001 The Eighteenth Year in a Circle of Sixty Years Seventy- eight Years Old In April, he went to Xiaoshan Home for the Aged together with Lu Xiujing, Han Zuyao, and other painters, and painted an eight-foot horizontal wall inscription of flowers and birds. In May, he participated in the National Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition of Research Institute of Culture and History as a member of the delegation of Zhejiang Provincial Research Institute of Culture and History. He visited Changsha Museum, Mao Zedong's Former Residence in Shaoshan, and Liu Shaoqi's Former Residence. Besides, he attended the forum of collecting materials in research institutes of culture and history in Zhangjiajie and completed a traditional Chinese painting with others. In September, he paid a visit to Guizhou province together with Zhou Wei, Wu Xueyan, Shan Meiyue, Shen Dingan, An Xuewen, and other members of the Provincial Research Institute of Culture and History. They visited the site of Zunyi Meeting, Huangguoshu Waterfall, and other scenic spots, and completed a Peony for communication. His main works of this year include Five Cranes Present Fortune, Red Plum and Pine Crane, A Carefree Life Insures Longevity, A Cockcrow Hears from the Upper Sky, Heron Stands among Reed Catkins and Autumn Waters Shine. 2002 The Nineteenth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Seventy- nine Years Old In March, Zhejiang TV made a special documentary named "Chinese Painter Zhang Yuejian". His main works of this year include Visions of Villages in South China, Play Ducks at the Lotus Pond, and etc. 2003 The Twentieth Year in A Circle of Sixty Years Eighty Years Old In January, he donated The Pine Tree and Crane to Mr. Wang Boming to congratulate his eighth birthday. On March 28, he died of heart attack at the age of 80. On April 1, his memorial meeting was held. 2004 In March, the album of painting Fanjin Zhong Ju by Zhang Yuejian was published by China Academy of Arts Press. "Zhang Yuejian Art Exhibition" and "Zhang Yuejian Art Seminar" were held in West Lake Art Museum by Zhejiang Provincial Museum. In April, works of Zhang Yuejian were selected in the second issue in 2004 of Chinese Bird-and-flower Painting. 2005 In July, The Road to Maestro—Wu Fuzhi by Zhang Yuejian, was published by Hubei Fine Arts Press. In September, An exhibition of Zhang Yuejian's works was held by Hangzhou Liuhe Culture Club, and 50 of his works were displayed. 2013 In September, Zhang Yuejian's family members donated 111 pieces of his painting and calligraphy works to ZJAM. |
