The Exhibition of Huang Binhong’s Works

Huang Binhong (1865-1955), original name Zhi, assumed name Binhong, was born in Jinhua, Zhejiang province. His ancestral home was She County in Anhui province. Influenced by the Xin’An School in his early age, he was called White Binhong before his 60s. Then he travelled many mountains, learned from nature and
created plenty of landscape paintings after his 60s. In his late years, he liked using ink, especially using dense black ink, dark ink and other ways of ink. His paintings were full of power and grandeur, which had a special painting technique of dark, dense, thick and heavy, reached a higher artistic state. When he was 90 years old, he was awarded the title of “Chinese People’s Excellent Artist”. In the March of 1955, he died in Hangzhou. His family has donated Huang Binhong’s collections and his own artworks, totally around 7000 pieces to our country. The works on this exhibit are selected from his donations.
Except the landscape, both Huang’s flower-and-bird painting and calligraphy got great achievements. He also had significance of painting theories, metal stone seal cutting, philology and archeology. Huang Binhong was an intellectual artist whom we cannot only take as a painter.
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Huang Binhong and the 60th anniversary of his death, Zhejiang Art Museum will held the Huang Binhong’s Works Exhibition since it opens to public, and will successively hold his works to the audience regularly. This exhibit selects 100 pieces of landscape paintings, flowerand-bird paintings and calligraphy of Huang Binhong’s works.
