Shi Mingde

On August 12, 2022, Shi Mingde, a famous painter, passed away in Jinhua, ending his 108 years of artistic life.

Shi Mingde (1915-2022), courtesy name Junhui, hailed from Dongyang, Zhejiang Province. He graduated from the Department of Art and the Department of Political Science of the National Yingshi University and was engaged in the creation of Chinese paintings and arts education for a long time. He started to practice painting in his teens, and this practice lasted until he was more than 100 years old. Through the sheer act of painting with a sincere attitude and love over an artistic career for more than 90 years, he created nearly 20,000 paintings, which earned him the title of an evergreen tree in the art garden in Zhejiang.

Back in 2013 and 2015, “A Painting Career of Eighty Years — An Exhibition of Shi Mingde’s Paintings” and “The Exhibition of Shi Mingde’s Lifetime Works as Part of the ZJAM Collection Series” were held in ZJAM. Shi Mingde voluntarily donated more than one hundred pieces of his Chinese paintings and documents to ZJAM.

After Shi Mingde died, his family voluntarily donated 25 pieces of his posthumous works to ZJAM again. On September 1, representatives from the Collection Department of ZJAM went specially to Jinhua to accept the donations. The donations included landscape and flower and bird paintings and calligraphy works. These works were created with vigorous and simple brushwork, bright colors, and a strongly personal style. They carry grand implicitness and charm hidden in simple strokes and play a positive role in enriching the collections of ZJAM and the study on the art of Shi Mingde.

We will always commemorate and revere Mr. Shi Mingde for his art and character!
