Xu Zongshuai’s Donations of Lin Fengmian’s Works Fill the Collection Gap in ZJAM

In order to support the collection construction of ZJAM and promote the research on Lin Fengmian’s art, Xu Zongshuai, a well-known scholar of Lin Fengmian studies, has recently donated some of Lin Fengmian’s works and other famous calligraphy treasures to ZJAM, filling the gap in its collection.

Xu Zongshuai, born in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province in 1948, lives in Hangzhou. He has long been dedicated to the Lin Fengmian studies and specializes in collecting literature related to Lin Fengmian.

On February 24, 2024, Ying Jinfei, curator of ZJAM, Chen Wei, director of the Solicitation Commission of the Academic Committee, and the staff of the Collection Department took over the donations from Mr. Xu Zongshuai and his wife Ms. Zhuang Liqing, and the 8 precious calligraphy and painting donations included 6 pieces of Lin Fengmian’s ink and colour paintings, one of Sha Menghai’s calligraphy works, and one of Xia Chengtao’s calligraphy works. Mr. Xu Zongshuai has been dedicated to the Lin Fengmian studies for years and is known as “the first master of literature related to Lin Fengmian”. He is the author of A Long Chronology of Lin Fengmian (in cooperation with Lin Yongjun) and so on. He said, “When I donate my collections, I share my feelings as well.” He donated the precious works of Lin Fengmian that he has collected for years to ZJAM, with the aim of further carrying forward the great artist’s art.

Lin Fengmian (1900-1991) was a world famous master of modern art, a great innovator in the integration of Eastern and Western art, and an important founder of modern arts education in China. He occupied an important position and had significant influence in the history of Chinese fine arts in the 20th century. Lin Fengmian’s works mark a gap in ZJAM’s collections, and these donations of his ink and colour paintings, which cover the subjects of landscape, flowers and birds, ladies and still life, are of positive significance for promoting the construction of a collection system for modern and contemporary famous artists in Zhejiang.

It is the best destination of art works to be the donations to national art museums. ZJAM expressed its sincere admiration and gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Xu for their kind donation. Meanwhile, it will properly protect, study, promote and display the donated works and live up to the deep expectations of the donors.
