Wu Guanzhong was a famous artist praised for his distinction in the art history of China during the 20th century, who made significant contributions to the exploration and practice of blending Chinese and Western arts. He also had great theoretical influence on the evolution of contemporary Chinese art. He dedicated his life to the nationalization of oil painting, blending Western painting and the Chinese traditional artistic spirit and aesthetic ideal. Throughout his career, he championed the creative ideas of “the nationalization of oil painting” and “the modernization of Chinese painting”, which led to the formation of his unique artistic characteristics. His works symbolize a direction in modern Chinese painting, showcasing how his exceptional creativity has facilitated the contemporary transformation of Chinese painting, which established him as a towering figure in the field.
Zhejiang was the origin of Wu Guanzhong’s artistic journey, which he affectionately referred to as his “first hometown of art”. In December 2009, he donated 56 of his paintings and 16 of his art collections to ZJAM for free, reflecting his repayment to his Alma Mater, his deep artistic connection to Zhejiang, and his commitment to supporting the collection construction of ZJAM. In 2010, his family again donated to ZJAM 48 significant sketches from his series “Journey to Yunnan” for free, making the museum a significant repository of Wu Guanzhong’s works.
Before he passed away, Wu Guanzhong once said, “If you miss me, come and visit my art exhibitions!” “My Devotion to Painting — Art Exhibition of Wu Guanzhong” jointly organized by Jilin Provincial Museum and ZJAM features some of Wu Guanzhong’s donations, including excellent and representative oil paintings, color ink paintings, and sketches. This exhibition is expected to display Mr. Wu Guanzhong’s artistic style, while enhancing artistic exchanges between Zhejiang and Jilin, promoting the development of cultural undertakings in both provinces, and celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
